I wrote this timer application before I knew about Hamster. You probably want to use that one instead.
Still, I really like my ptimer. It has less features and is much more bare-bones than Hamster, but I like the commandline interoperability, and it integrates with my work's OpenGroupware timesheet (If you're interested, contact me at: neels at this host).

neels@box:~$ ptimer bar |
A thin, yet comfortable timer to record your working hours across multiple work projects.
- Has both commandline and panel icon interface: "Normal" people use the systray-ptimer that shows an icon on your panel's notification area. Shell freaks use the ptimer commandline tool. Both can be used simultaneously, interacting with each other.
- Keeps track of your running total of working hours, as well as individual projects' times.
- Provides a nice log of project hours per day and month.
- Detects suspend, log out, shut down etc.: No need to remember switching off the timer.
- All data is kept in human readable form, so you can edit it if necessary.
- Integrate into your shell prompt using the human readable status file.
